Houston Airport Parking

Please advice any cheap option to park car at houston intercontinental airport for 10 days....

Thanks

Houston Airport Parking

I like Fast Park and Relax on Greens Road, just west of JFK. Great daily rates, don%26#39;t know about long term rates.

Houston Airport Parking

Do you have any phone no for that or any website?...

The best deal with reaonsable security is the Airport Authority (called Parking Cents) economy outside lot for $6 per day, northeast corner of JFK and Greens Road, web site is for map and rate details is www.fly2houston.com/0/415639/0/1906D1934/

Fast Park %26amp; Relat is 3100 Greens Road, Telephone 281-442-5600, www.FastParkAndRelax.com, rates vary, especially if you%26#39;re employed by a large company and the company issues you a ';Relax for Rewards'; membership card. Details are on their web site.

Fast Park is just over $4 per day, last I paid.

A little late getting to this - but for 10-days you might be better off taking a taxi back and forth (depending where you live). Other than that several park %26amp; ride down JFK and Will Clayton - several of them also have coupons. Usually it is around $4/day for uncovered and $6/ covered. I have used several (all off Will Clayton) and never had any issues.

Lost Colony #17

Just got back from trip to Port A. Loved the beach -the beach house, on the other hand, was a complete letdown. At $425 a night, I expected everything to be in top working order. This was supposed to be a 4 bedroom, 4 bath house. Well, guess it was but you have to go down the outside stairs to the bedroom under the deck. We got there thinking it was a part of the main house and it hadn%26#39;t been cleaned for the last ';25 times'; the maid had ';cleaned'; (I use the word loosely) the house. Broken glass, paint peeling off, no locks on slider doors (used wood poles to keep doors ';locked';), broken upstairs jaccuzzi that used all hot water to fill, dirty, pet urine stains and smell, broken floor tiles, 5 broken beach umbrellas, cheap outdoor plastic chairs, wood rot on decks, dust on blinds, water stains on drapes and mold growing out of heater vents. You%26#39;re expected to start laundry load before you leave and leave no trash or used dishes. NO maid service and only couple towels per bathroom so frequent laundry is a must. You have to buy your own laundry soap and paper products. We had to clean the glass doors ourselves just to be able to enjoy the gulf view. The kicker was when we got there for our 6 night vacation they ask didn%26#39;t we want the 7th night free? Never knew about this when made reservation. Lots of nicer places out there for the money.

Lost Colony #17

Thanks for the info, that was horrible to pay that much to get a run down place. Thanks for letting other know about this terrible place. We usually stay at Sandcastle condo %26amp; never had a problem, The property is kept up well %26amp; very clean.

Lost Colony #17

Appreciate you letting us all know. we are leaving to go back to Port A in June and I had started looking for other places. We always stay at A Laughing Horse Lodge and have always loved it, just thought we might try something different this year. Guess not, you scared me. I booked our rooms at A Laughing Horse Lodge today. I guess I should have know to stay with what you know is great! thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KS thanks for your review. My family is staying in one of the Lost Colony houses in June. Not sure which one because it belongs to someone my sister knows so we%26#39;re getting a really good deal. But how is the area that these are in? I know its the green one across the street from the pool. Don%26#39;t know what this really means but we can%26#39;t really see the beach since the dunes are so large. But how is the beach in this area? Is the water pretty? How about jellyfish? We usually go to Destin, Fla. I know its not that clear but Florida has awful jellyfish and little stinging things. We went to SPI a few years back and absolutely loved it! Again, the water wasn%26#39;t like Florida but still beautiful and NO jellyfish the entire week we were there! Are there many people on the beach in this area? Also, is this in the middle of Port A and Corpus? Where is the ferry located from this location? Thanks for your help!

Hi Red - The Lost Colony is at the end of the drive behind a security gate which the management company gives a code for on check in all the way in Port A. There are multi colored homes on the drive before you get to the gate. Don%26#39;t think any gulf view but I could be wrong. I saw an area for a pool with the colored homes but must have been extremely small since I saw no water from street. Lost colony has a very small pool for residents/visitors. Maybe we touched very unlucky because some of the houses looked like improvements have been made (hurricane shutters, etc) Maybe this one just bad management. Lost Colony homes are all grey. Beach was great and can walk forever. Last year we stayed at Sandpiper which is next condo complex to the north. Liked it there. Last year lots of jellyfish and shells on beach - this year I saw no jellyfish and sparse shells???? The water got rougher everyday which is great if you want to try surfing but last day I couldn%26#39;t stay in water due to undertow. Water cold but tolerable this time of year. We went March 2009. Good Luck!

So the pool in the pictures near the gray houses is not the pool for the colored houses? These are seperate? I thought they were all Lost Colony. I%26#39;m sooo confused, lol.

Hi Red - Sorry to confused but I think the multi- colored homes have a pool - maybe it is shared with lost colony also. There is a security gate that is just before the gray homes. Look at this site and you will see the Lost colony homes with numbers on them - I honestly don%26#39;t think the multi-colored homes are Lost Colony but I sure could be wrong! Port Aransas is approx 10 mins away from Lost Colony. The ferry is in Port A. Have a great time. lostcolonyporta.com/images/Lost-Colony.jpg

Dear Red,

I just got back from Port Aransas. We stayed at Lost Colony for a week. I would echo what prairiedweller wrote. We stayed at 20LC with many of the same problems. You are staying at Lost Colony Villas. The good news is you are a lot closer to the only dumpster on the property! Lost Colony and Lost Colony Villas are two different properties. The only thing they share are the boardwalk and dumpster. The pool for the villas is very small, tiny. You will not be able to see the ocean from your house unless it has a rooftop deck. You will be about a block from the boardwalk.

I too love Destin but stopped going because everytime we went there was a water quality problem. Port A water is not clear like Destin but it is OK. We had a few jelly fish last week but not many. The sea week was increasing as we left but it comes and goes. Lost Colony is pretty far out so the beach will not be too crowded. On Thursday we had it all to ourselves.

Enjoy your trip.

Courtyard Condominiums

has anyone stayed here? whats it like?

Courtyard Condominiums

I%26#39;m actually staying at the Courtyard right now, and I want to highly recommend it. My family and I come here twice a year, and have for the last fifteen or so. The prices are mid-range, the condos are all privately owned and decorated in similar styles with accents per owner. The kitchens are generous and have all the basic necessities, but if you have a favorite pot or pan, I recommend you bring it.

The %26#39;Courtyard%26#39; gets it name from the courtyard effect that it has around a center green yard. Half of it is divided into a sort of %26#39;green-grass-bbq-grills%26#39; and the other half is a well-kept pool. Because of the way this place is built, when you walk outside your room, you are facing the courtyard and there%26#39;s enough of a breeze to send the mosquitoes off.

The lady who runs the place is super nice, and if something bugs you, go straight to her or the housekeeping staff. She recognizes us every year, although it might have something to do with my blue hair. (Lol, you think?)

I send my friends here when they visit Port A, and we%26#39;re considering buying one of the condos sometime before the end of the year.

Courtyard Condominiums

I have stayed here a few times and it suits the purpose. It%26#39;s within walking distance of the beach, the rooms are clean, the prices are good, the people are nice, and the kitchen is equipped.

I think most people would find it enjoyable.

I know this post is old but I just joined and I am having fun posting my opinion. We stayed at Courtyard two years ago. I would not stay there again. On a positive note I will say they had a very nice pool. The rooms were a decent size but the murphy bed was not comfortable. The bathroom was small, especially with two doors.

They are close to the beach but you do not have a beach feel because the rooms are centered around the courtyard. The rooms are very dark. When I was there it rained heavily and the courtyard flooded almost to the door. I checked out. Prices are reasonable so I guess you get what you pay for.

  • Beach House 1-3

    Hi,

I keep seeing references to condos called ';Beach House I'; (also II %26amp; III). I have googled %26amp; googled, but I can%26#39;t find these. Can someone give me a link for their website?

    Beach House 1-3

they are condo%26#39;s www.service24.com www.pirentals.com depends on what you are looking for. We stayed there 2 years ago. Nice view, gated, beds in kids room was hard 1 just slept on the couch, but with last years hurrican alot of things have been updated.

    Beach House 1-3

Beach House Condominiums is located at 3400 Gulf Blvd. It is a gated complex with 3 beach front buildings. BH I %26amp; II are 5 floor with 4 units on each floor. BH III has 6 floors,3 units on each floor. All units are beach front. The 3 buildings share a gated parking,2 pools and a jacuzzi. Beach House has no rental office. You%26#39;ll have to look for them at various rental agencies,or rent from owners that advertise on the web.Only less than half of the units re rental, so the complex is less crowded than most. Look through vrbo.com if you want to rent directly from owners. I hope that helps.

    Thanks for all your help!

How would the location/amenities compare with Saida III? We%26#39;ve stayed there before and enjoyed it, but I wonder if the beach would be less crowded at the Beach House condos. Any opinions?

Never have stayed at the Saidi before but I have at the Beach House. Saidi is huge and that is one reason shy we have never chosen it. Beach House is a smaller. We stayed on the 1st floor right by the pool. We could get to the beach super easy.

There maids quaters at the Beach House and my guess is because a lot of Mexicans own the condos. Mexicans have maids.

The Mexicans stay up late and sleep late. I had no trouble going to sleep though. they were talkative at the pool.

    Beach House is fine.

  • Snorkeling SPI

Where is the best places to go snorkeling?

    Snorkeling SPI

To me, SPI is not the place to snorkle like Mexico is. The water is not as clear. I went once and once was enough for me. they took us out by the jetty and the water was rough. There wasnt too much to see.

You can give it a try but I like snokling in Mexico and the Caribbean much better.

    Schlitterbahn half day tickets

Does anyone know the price of the half-day tickets? No info on their website and after going through the dial-up phone maze, it said operator is busy please try again and disconnected :*( !!! Thanks.

    Schlitterbahn half day tickets

I asked this question a few months ago on this forum and didn%26#39;t get an answer, and looked all over their web site and couldn%26#39;t find it. I didn%26#39;t try calling though. I did notice on their website today that they are open on the weekends now, so maybe there will be somebody there to answer the phone. Good luck and if you find out, post your answer here. Kellie

    Schlitterbahn half day tickets

Tried again to get through and this time it says the person at the ';information desk'; is unable and you cannot leave a message because the mailbox is full...ugghh I tried pressing ';1'; for park ticket prices and it says ';visit our website';. Been there done that and nothing about half day. Guess I just have to see when we get there.

I wish I could help you! I love just doing the half day. I do half at New Braunfels and SPI. If I remember right, It should be around 24.00ish???

THanks. I think with a 6 and 9 year old half a day is plenty. I have done the NB one and it can be overwhelming even for an adult!

    Grapevine Super 8

We will be in Grapevine in Aug. for convention.

Looking for cheaper lodging than the Gaylord. Anyone familiar with the Grapevine Super 8?

    Grapevine Super 8

Yes its not far away. I generally stay there when I have to overnight at DFW. They will shuttle you to downtown grapeview. Good location, and if have a car great location.

    Grapevine Super 8

The Super 8 is a good inexpensive alternative to the Gaylord. It%26#39;s close enough to Main Street that if you want to take in some local flavor it%26#39;s an easy ride due north. If you aren%26#39;t going to have a car, the hotel shuttle may be willing to drop you off down there. It%26#39;s a must see.

Family Vacation on Texas Gulf Coast

We normally go to Gulf Shores, Alabama for summer vacation but this year we are thinking about visiting the beaches of Texas. Our kids are 4 and 8. Which gulf coast city do you recommend? Hotels? Attractions? Restaurants? Thanks!

Family Vacation on Texas Gulf Coast

I%26#39;d say head further east from Gulf Shores and go to Destin, Florida. The beaches are much nicer than any found here in Texas.

But if Texas is really what you want, head to South Padre for the best beaches we have to offer. There%26#39;s not much else there though.

IF your kids like water parks, consider skipping the beach all together and heading to Shlitterbahn in New Braunfels. There%26#39;s a small one in South Padre, but the one in New Braunfels is enormous.

Family Vacation on Texas Gulf Coast

My family goes to Crystal Beach (on the upper Texas coast)every July and we rent a beachfront cabin. But there%26#39;s no comparison to Gulf Shores....no white sand and no clear water. Although the county does its best to keep it clean, the beach is often littered with trash from ships in the Gulf and the seaweed has been bad the past few years. I have seen the beach pretty and the water clear at the shoreline, but not very often. There are lots of shells though. We enjoy hunting for fossilized sharks teeth and pretty pieces of beach glass. Anyway, we love it. I%26#39;m just afraid you might be disappointed after spending so many summers at Gulf Shores. You might enjoy staying on the seawall in Galveston. There%26#39;s lots to do there with Moody Gardens and the Strand. I also suggest Schlitterbahn Water Park in New Braunfels (NOT Galveston). My family goes every August and we stay in a room inside the park, which is so convenient. You and your kids would love it. And the frozen margaritas are so good! Check it out.

We live in Conroe, TX and enjoyed South Padre Island but are planning our honeymoon to Cozumel Mexico, where the beaches are much nicer. The beaches in CA are also better. I lived in Los Angeles for 6 years and miss the beaches. We are also planning a Destin FL trip in August with family and they say it%26#39;s beautiful. I don%26#39;t recommend TX for the beaches. Our populace doesn%26#39;t visit them too often.

I go from San DIego To Crystal Beach a couple time a year . San DIego is so much prettier in almost everyway. But that being said the water is warm the wavers are long and small, the water is pretty shallow waste deep for almost 200 yards then it gets even shallower about knee deep for another 150 yards then it drops of to around 36%26#39; feet.

I stay a place called Abalone Shores that is rented by Swedes They have about 300 cabins for rent. My parents have a small place away from the crowds called the Sugar Shack it is like having a private beach not a sould around.

This is a link I got today and though you may be interested in.

Thanks for your suggestions. We have decided to go back to Gulf Shores/Orange Beach this year.

Here is the thing about Texas beaches: Note that most of the population of Texas lives *WAY AWAY* from the beach. Im from California, and expected ';beautiful'; tropical beaches in Texas with warmer water than California. Once you pass all of those hideous refineries in Corpus Christi, North Padre island *looks* nice. HOWEVER, the sign listing all the deadly things sighted in the water (Such as Portugese Man-of war) was my first disappointment, then it was followed by humidity that fogs your glasses over when you open the door- at MIDNIGHT. I went to North Padre Island through Corpus Christi, and ended up staying at the hotel Selena (The Singer) got shot at somehow. This place is horrible. TEXAS BEACHES STINK. It must have been the steaming mud of Corpus Christi (AKA The Eternal Bog of Stench). Aside from my scatterbrain comments there, I am planning a roadtrip myself in June. I am headed from just outside SF to Destin, FL. I cannot tell you how many people have told me to go there, so Im planning on it. I probably wont escape the humidity, but I hear the jellyfish the ';size of people'; problem, the stench, and discusting refineries of the Texas coast wont be there to greet me in Destin.

extradriving - you will not be disappointed with Destin. The beaches in Alabama/Florida are great and there are lots of other things to do besides the beach. .. Happy beaching!

When I saw this topic, I decided to add my advice about the Texas Gulf Coast for future readers.....Don%26#39;t Go!! Don%26#39;t even think about it!!

I actually live in North Central Texas, and have decided that I will never go to the Texas Coast again. One thing that hasn%26#39;t been mentioned is that many gulf coast communities allow people to DRIVE on the beach!

You%26#39;re sitting out there, trying to enjoy a beach experience. Now, visualize this: numerous oil rigs in the distance, oil tanker ships going back and forth, stinky, sometimes oily, water lapping along the shore (there is no real surf to speak of) and then along comes a pick-up truck barreling down the beach. Forget it!!

I live among the ';disgusting refineries of the Texas coast'; and even though we just returned from our first trip to beautiful Destin, Florida, I still look forward to our annual trip to Crystal Beach, Texas, with family and friends. Oh, it%26#39;s no Destin or Gulf Shores for sure, but there is beauty there. The people who live there see it and the people who go year after year see it, but to each his own, I say. Find a beach you love and enjoy the summer!

On September 13, 2008, Crystal Beach, Texas, was totally devastated by Hurricane Ike....

  • Where to stay?

After reading some more posts, it seems that downtown is rather desolate at night. Where in Houston would you recommend staying for a lively atmosphere. I heard that the Uptown area of Dallas is the active area and not downtown. Does Houston have an area like this?

    Where to stay?

Yes, this would be our Galleria area. Lots of hotels, dining and shopping.

    Where to stay?

    Hi Jax,

The Galleria area,as suggested is a good area for lots of fun things to do, day or night. The main street, Westheimer, is full of shopping, restaurants, etc. There is a nice Drury Inn, in that area, and try the Hotel Indigo, for a nice place to base your enjoyment of Houston. There are also some good bed and breakfasts in the more historical area of town, as well:

    http://www.bbonline.com/tx/houston.html

(rememebr when looking at the B and B%26#39;s, that Galveston is at the coast, and a good hour from H-town.)

I would also recommend the Montrose area; it is our arts and kinda funky/cool area of town--tons of good places to eat, clubs, etc.

When looking for restaurants in H-town, go to:

    http://www.b4-u-eat.com/

Great website for looking for places to eat, listen to live music, eat or drink on a nice outdoor patio and enjoy the Texas moon (it is Our moon, isn%26#39;t it?! ;)--notice that on the main page there, you can input what area of town, from a pull-down menu.

hope this helps and you have a great time here!

    Downtown Houston/Convention Center

Hello! Can anyone tell me about the new Pavilions development in downtown Houston? We will be in town for only one evening, staying at the Hilton-Americas connected to the Convention Center and are wondering where to go and what to do. We%26#39;re headed to the Space Center the next day, so we probably won%26#39;t get too crazy (tram + hangover = unpleasant start to vacation), but would also like to kick off the vacation with some fun.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks --

    Downtown Houston/Convention Center

Houston Pavilions is open and operating, with larger retail tenants being House of Blues, Books-A-Million, Forever 21 (shopping), McCormick %26amp; Schmick’s (high end Steaks) and Guadalajara del Centro. Lucky Strike Lanes opening was delayed until sometime in the fall by financing problems for the build out. Many other restaurants are still being built out balance of 2009.

Lots of other walkable options, eating and drinking places vicinity of Main Street and Texas Avenue plus cheap seats at Minute Maid if Astros are home.

Midtown district (vicinity of Bagby Street %26amp; West Gray Street) similar to Main X Texas, but more open air places for the evening hours.

    Downtown Houston/Convention Center

    Hi Gunner,

Midtown is a great suggestion for night of fun--we like to walk from club to restaurant, etc. Coco%26#39;s Crepes for dessert and people watching. For restaurants by area, go to:

In midtown, we like Ibiza for dinner, too.

Don%26#39;t miss going to the Sky Bar at the top of your hotel to enjoy the view and the sunset..great martinis, too!

  • Parking in Houston?

We%26#39;re first time visitors to Houston %26amp; want to drive into the city from the Cypess area. We really need info on the best area to aim for %26amp; where to park. Info on parking regulations, charges etc, generally what is best.

    Parking in Houston?

In the heart of downtown you have metered parking (usually 2 hrs and less) or several parking lots. It is less than $2 / hour on the average or for long term about $8 for the day. Besides DT parking is free for the most part.

Depending on your interest you might want to go to the Hermann Park area or Discovery Green (or Discovery Park) in DT. Looks like a nice day for outdoors. Lots of small parades - I don%26#39;t have details - hopefully someone else will get you that info.

    Downtown historic district ghost tours

We%26#39;ve lived in Houston area for several years but not done many of the ';touristy'; things. My wife heard about downtown ghost tours of historic district. Does anyone know anything about these? Are they worth the time/cost?

    Downtown historic district ghost tours

Lived in Kingwood since 1980 - never heard of the ghost tours. Sorry - cannot help.

    Downtown historic district ghost tours

    Hi New,

I agree with Kingwood, I was born here, and had not heard of ghost tours. One of the best I have been on, is in New Orleans, in the Quarter..so don%26#39;t miss that one, when you go there!

    But, I found this:

    paranormal.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm鈥?/a>

I know it was once said that there is a ghost that lives at the Old Spaghetti Warehouse in Houston, so I am sure we have our share of fantasms.

If you all go, let us know how it is, and we can reccomend it to others who vist H-town.

IAH to Woodlands Tx-need general advice

I am supposed to be arriving at IAH on Thur May 28 in at 3pm. By the time i get my rental car and on the road heading to the Conroe area on US45 north, I know 1- I will be hungry, are there any good oriential resturants on that road, early dinner costs around $10-15. 2-how can i check for road closures on 45 -i%26#39;m a nervous driver and will mapquest a route out, but i know that detours don%26#39;t always show up on mapquest. Thanks in advance for advice and help.

IAH to Woodlands Tx-need general advice

You have 2 basic roads from IAH to The Woodlands: The Hardy Toll Road and I-45 (free). It is a short drive - about 25 minutes. The toll road will have less traffic and will take you to I-45 just before The Woodlands. Once you get to The Woodlands there are several restaurants. I would wait until I get to The Woodlands to eat. You will be just in front of the rush hour traffic - so if you stop you will get caught to it. To answer the question there are Chinese restuarants in Spring (on the way). If you do decide to stop do not take the toll road.

PF Changs is one (a nicer one) and Pei Wei is another PF Chang%26#39;s but chepaer and a different menu. Several others too. Go to www.b4ueathouston.com. for additional info on restuarants.

IAH to Woodlands Tx-need general advice

I would suggest you go the Hardy Toll Road from IAH, this will drop directly onto I-45, just south of The Woodlands area. I believe there are only 2 toll stops on this stretch of road.

The PF Chang%26#39;s mentioned above is actually right next to the The Woodlands Mall, and a bit confusing to get to. I%26#39;m not a big fan of chinese food, except for one across town, so I can%26#39;t help with the food.

I drove up to the Conroe area just last week. There were no closures on the freeway itself, just some exit ramps had construction/detours, near Loop 336.

    Rehearsal Dinner

We are looking for a restaurant to host a rehearsal dinner for 40-50 people. Our son and his fiance want to keep it low key and relaxed. The bride live in south Austin and the rest of the bridal party will be from out of state. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

    Rehearsal Dinner

Rudy%26#39;s BBQ-Round Rock would be very low key and enjoyable for your out of state visitors...maybe less formal than your looking for but it%26#39;s a possibility.

    Rehearsal Dinner

Questions: budget, private dining room, how ';relaxed,'; Round Rock or Austin?

Z Tejas comes to mind without knowing more details. They have a private dining room and are one of the most affordable places for a group that size. Same for Chez Zee, although Chez Zee is slightly more upscale.

Are you looking for something in Round Rock specifically, or the entire Austin/Round Rock area? If in Round Rock specifically, try the recently opened Salt Lick BBQ. It%26#39;s the same as the Salt Lick in Driftwood and should be able to serve a large party. Here%26#39;s the website -- http://www.saltlickbbq.com/

    What time of year?

After four on Friday my daughter and I walked from City Hall across the bridge to Auditorium Shores, a distance less than what you contemplate. Of course it was hot, muggy, with no respite on the bridge from the sun. All the while I wondered why I was doing this, since I knew better....and it%26#39;s not even the height of summer!

We would be travelling in either October or November.

The weather will be much nicer for walking at that time of year, but you%26#39;ll still have to watch out for traffic. It%26#39;s doable, but don%26#39;t expect a nice, peaceful walk.

Where to DANCE in Weatherford area?

Country line dancing, like for active senior citizens.

    Hip hop.

    Rock and Roll.

    Country.

    Disco.

    Live Bands?

    20 mile radius!

Irish family - could we cope with the weather?!

    Hi

We are considering visiting San Antonio next July. Are we mad (with regard to being able to cope with the weather)?

We are a family of 5 from Northern Ireland. The kids range in age from 14 - 8. Would we be able to have an enjoyable holiday in that month? San Antonio looks like it has so much to offer.

Any advice would be much appreciated (and yes, we have the typically pale, Irish skin!)

    Thanks

    SAra

Irish family - could we cope with the weather?!

The highs would be around 32-38. Lows 25-29 on average. August is the hottest month, July a close second. August can break 38 easy.

That said we have A/C here. The first office building in the USA to have A/C was here in SA. Yes its hot %26amp; humid but lots of folks manage it. When you get here but some 50 water/sweet proof sunscreen and keep in on and you will be ok.

There are some water parks here that will keep you cool.

Irish family - could we cope with the weather?!

You plan your day around the heat. The siesta was invented for a reason! Get up early and do as much as possible by noon. Have lunch inside, spend the afternoon either at the hotel pool or doing some indoor activity. See the Imax Alamo movie in the afternoon, shop at an indoor mall, or stop in to one of the many museums SA has to offer. Take a late afternoon nap then go out again after the sun goes down for more fun.

    Sara,

You will love San Antonio! Yes, it is hot in July, but the River Walk has misters to cool you off as you stroll, buildings are air conditioned, and you can plan your day around your comfort zone.

Be sure to visit the San Antonio Museum of Art, which has a premier exhibit of Latin American Folk Art; Take an early morning stroll through the King William district to see old homes and lovely gardens; go to El Mercado for souvenirs straight from Mexico; and be sure to stop by Jim Cullum%26#39;s Landing on the River Walk in the evening for some great jazz. If you want to see Texas tacky at its ultimate, visit the Buckhorn Museum (dead animals on the walls). Be sure to visit at least some of the missions--there is a tram tour that will take you around San Antonio%26#39;s attractions for a very nominal fee. You get on and get off as you want, and the ticket is good for at least a full day.

Buy a wide brimmed hat, put on some sunscreen, and enjoy San Antonio!

Yes I think you can handle the heat if you do what the above posters suggested that in the mid afternoon do the things that involve being inside with A/C or where water is involve. They have Sunscreen that is 50 %26amp; you won%26#39;t get Sunburn. There is a lot to do in SA as well as inside activities to keep you very busy %26amp; lots of Theme Parks with water parks. Maybe you should consider coming in June where it%26#39;s not as hot.

Thanks everyone for your replies. We have to travel during July because of school holidays but we are reassured that we should be able to cope if we follow the suggestions given here.

    Sara

You know, many Irish, German, Polish, and Swedish immigrants chose to live in Texas. I think you%26#39;ll be able to handle a visit!

On the serious side, you definitely will feel blown away by the afternoon heat. If you do as the locals do, and plan your activities for the mornings and evenings, you%26#39;ll be fine.

In the heat of the day, even the water parks can be rough, if you aren%26#39;t careful. Drink lots of fluids if you will be out in the heat!

People here dress very comfortably in the summer. Sundresses, shorts, t-shirts, and light shoes are all commonly worn about. Linen and Cotton are your friends...

I have acquaintances who visit (from Ireland) in the summer months and they seem to cope just fine. It will be hot but the best advice was to organize your days around the heat. Everything here is air conditioned. Avoid the mid-afternoon heat and arrange outdoor activities in the mornings and evenings. Hope you choose SA as a destination. Bring lotsa sunscreen and wear a hat.

Hi, we live in San Antonio and yes there is a lot to do, my wife is from Scotland and she will tell you the best time to visit here is March/April and October/November...July is hot, but not as hot as Florida, Arizona etc. You do a lot of the outdoor active stuff in the morning and early evening. It really depends what you like to do. A lot of great museums, so you can plan your trip around the heat. SeaWorld with a water park and rides are fun! Hope this helps.

    March convention in Austin

Please advise the best hotel to stay in for a convention. I have heard the Four Seasons and the Hilton. Is the Hyatt too far?

    Please help.

    March convention in Austin

The Hilton is adjacent to the convention center, so if that%26#39;s where you%26#39;re convention is located, it would be the best as far as location goes. The Four Seasons is beautiful, right on the lake, and within walking distance of the convention center. The Hyatt would be too far to walk, in my opinion, especially with unpredictable March weather. March is a busy month in Austin, with the South by Southwest Festival and various other major events, so book early!

    March convention in Austin

Thanks so much.. I booked the four seasons as most of the posts indicate that it%26#39;s really nice.

    our trip to Dallas

I´am planing our trip to Texas. We are going to fly on Sep 26 to Houston and going back on Oct 09.

We already bought Football tickets for Texas A%26amp;M on Oct 03 in Dallas and Houston Texans tickets for Oct 04 in Houston.

I would like to be one or two nights befor the A%26amp;M game in Dallas but where should we stay? Should we book a hotel in Fort Worth near the stockyards or are there other nice places in Dallas to stay. I would like to see a rodeo and we both love country music.

We are not sure how we should plan our Texas trip because it is a big state. Do you have any suggestion for us? We are planing to drive from Houston to San Antonio, to Austin, to Bandera and to Fredericksburg, than we should be in Dallas and Houston for the football game. After the game in Houston we still have time to see what?

    Thank you for your help

    Nicole

    our trip to Dallas

The Texas A%26amp;M game is actually at the new Cowboy stadium located in Arlington, midway between FW and Dallas. I would recommend staying in downtown FW and spending maybe the Friday night in the Stockyards, going to the rodeo and some of the bars, including the White Elephant and Billy Bob%26#39;s.

You could go to the State Fair in Dallas on the Thursday, taking the TRE (Trinity Railway Express) over to Dallas, then catching the bus or light rail to the fair.

Since your trip is split down the middle with the football weekend, you may have to double back a little on the driving in order to see all the places you want to go. As long as you enjoy driving, no problem.

You might combine the first few days after you land in Houston in a road trip to San Antonio/Austin (definitely hit the Broken Spoke while in Austin), up to FW/Dallas for the Stockyards/A%26amp;M game, down to Houston for the Texans.

Then decide if you feel up to driving back out toward Fredericksburg/Bandera. I think it is worth the trek but you might be pooped by then. Again, depends on how you feel about all the driving around.

    our trip to Dallas

Thank you for your answer. I booked a Hotel via priceline in Irving (Hyatt Place) before the A%26amp;M game. We are excited to see the new Cowboys stadium. It looks awesome! Hope the parking fee will be not too expensive. Is this game a special game for A%26amp;M because the don`t play in their own stadium? Can you tell me where we should stay in Austin? I would like to stay close to country bars, so no one has to drive. Can I compare Austin with Nashville??

    Nicole

In Austin, you could stay at a Bed and Breakfast. The Austin Folk House is really funky and breakfast is terrific. It is close to campus and downtown. The same awesome people own the Star of Texas Inn just about 2 blocks away.

IMO Austin is nothing like Nashville. Austin is really a big city and capital of Texas. (We rode Segways while in Austin. Cool ride.)

Nashville is country and feels small town. And that%26#39;s a good thing.

Frederickburg has about 300 Bed and Breakfast. You can find and book them by going to the BnB.com website.

Texas A%26amp;M has set up a 10 year deal (with a 20- year option) to play a game each year in the Cowboy stadium. This will allow for a wider audience and more revenue- their home base in College Station isn%26#39;t a huge metroplex like FW/Dallas.

I suggest you look at staying downtown in Austin- it is a very walkable city and you can find lots of music venues along Sixth Street as well as the Warehouse district and 4th St. What may determine where you decide to stay is price and availablity. There are quite a few threads addressing this. We have enjoyed Extended Stay (not fancy but free parking and kitchen) and the Radisson (close to Congress for bat viewing).

    www.6street.com

    …austin.tx.us/downtown/…downtown_hotels.pdf

As far as music and Nashville- Austin is billed as the ';Live Music Capital of the World';. While that does include some great honky tonks and CW music, the live music scene in Austin is much more varied and sometimes eclectic. You won%26#39;t find a row of honky tonks as you would see on Broadway in Nashville. You will get more of that honky tonk/live CW music feel in the Stockyards of Fort Worth.

Threadgills is a good restaurant with a live music venue and lots of history. I haven%26#39;t been to Donn%26#39;s Depot on 5th yet but hear it is fun.

Not all the best CW clubs are downtown or walkable. The Broken Spoke is a classic and you can see some great live acts at the Continental Club (for example Dale Watson)but not all will be country. Ginny%26#39;s is a small place but fun. Best bet for these is take a cab.

Some people would be offended when Nashville and Texas are mentioned in the same breath. Nashville music is definitely more commercial. Texas has a slighlty different genre of music..and proud of it.

Austin is definitely the %26#39;big city%26#39; when comparing

    to the city of Nashville

Gruene Hall is the oldest dance hall in Texas.

It is right next to the Grist Mill Restaurant which is awesome. (Eat there first and you will want to eat every meal there!!!!!! And the prices are very reasonable.) Next door in the Gruene Mansion Inn, a great place to stay because you can walk to everything from there.

The town calls itself Gruene but it is actually a part of New Braunfels, TX. You will need to prebook your room because all the Bed and Breakfast sell out nearly every weekend in the summer. And there are not any hotels in Gruene. You can also ride the river there.

(I ate at Oma%26#39;s Haus and I wish I had eaten again at the Grist Mill Restaurant instead.)

Gruene should definitely be on your list of places to visit while in Texas.

  • Has anyone been to Galveston beaches, since the hurricane?

I am interested in going to the beaches in Galveston, TX; however, I can%26#39;t find out if everyone is back to normal, since the hurricane last year.

Has anyone been to Galveston beaches, since the hurricane?

Check the Galveston forum, there is a lot of updated information there.

Just click on the ';Galveston'; to the right of your topic title and all the Galveston posts will come up.

Has anyone been to Galveston beaches, since the hurricane?

Thank you for your information, it really helped!

We%26#39;re virtually back to normal - come see us!

The beaches are GORGEOUS right now as it is all ovely new sand following the beach replenishment program.

Most of the hotels and restaurants by the beach are open too. The only place that is still a little out of it is downtown, but even there there are a few bars and cafes open.

Some buisnesses did not survive the hurricaine, but there are plenty of restaurants and sand has been added to some places along the beachfront. Moody Gardens is starting to open up a little at a time and I understand that by the end of the month, everything there will be open except for some of the animal displays.

Thanks to all who have responded!

As of May 3rd, all the beaches looked pretty busy and beautiful. Even Crystal Beach on Bolivar looked fresh and new. There is a small portion of the seawall that has metal peices sticking out of the sand. It is near the Flagship Hotel, ruined by the storm. It will be easy to notice. Steer clear of that section but the rest looked great. I even saw people surfing!

Just went this weekend and it looked great. Best areas, in my opinion are from 37th to 70th street.

  • Shopping on the Strand?

Hi there. I%26#39;m celebrating my birthday in Galveston this weekend and I will probably spend a full day just taking in the sights and sounds on the Strand before heading to the Symphony at night.

My question is this, I would like to do a good deal of walking and window shopping. Does anyone know if Hendley Market is open yet? Are there any other neat shops that are open yet? And any other tips are appreciated. I set on the Strand for Sunday. Saturday is Seawall day.

    Thanks.

    :)

    Shopping on the Strand?

I%26#39;m not in Galveston and haven%26#39;t bee since Ike, but MANY of the web sites for spots are still showing that they are closed.

    Shopping on the Strand?

Hendley Market just opened this weekend (Memorial Weekend), but only had a couple of tables of stuff. A whole group of stores reopened on the Strand for the first time this weekend.

    Shrimp Boats

My husband used to go to Galveston as a child and remembers watching the shrimp boats bringing in their catch of the day or whatever. Is there a certain location or time of the day where this would be. We have booked a room at Commodore next week because they have a balocny looking out at the seawall. DH is hoping to be able to sit on the balcony with a nice happy hour sipper and his binoculars and watch. He is looking forward to this...will he be able to see this from that location or will we need to go somewhere else?

    Shrimp Boats

Found this little bit of information on galveston.com. I know you didn%26#39;t ask about birds, but it still pertains. Hope it helps!

    Shrimp Fleet Berth

Watch the birds waiting for the return of the shrimp boats, known locally as the ';Mosquito Fleet'; at Pier 19, and enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants on Harborside Drive between 22nd and 19th Streets.

sea world-- are 2 days enough time/ feeding dolphins

Can we do/see everything at Sea World in 2 days?? Party of 4 myself,dh, 8 %26amp; 6 year old.

I heard there is a time when you can feed the dolphins that does not require you to purchase an additional tour? Does anyone have info on this?

sea world-- are 2 days enough time/ feeding dolphins

There is a dolphin tank close to the bud area, that you can buy some fish and feed them.

Everything at Sea World in two days. More then enought.

sea world-- are 2 days enough time/ feeding dolphins

Two days is definitely more than enough. You can buy a plate of fish for $5 and feed them at just about any time. While feeding, you can often reach down and pet them.

Yes 2 days would be perfect especially if you plan to use the water park as well. www.seaworld.com/SanAntonio

No you don%26#39;t have to purchase an additional tour to feed the dolphins as the above poster said you just have to buy the fish.

thanks for the info. we are planning to do the water park so we will plan for 2 days. any ';insider'; tips about sea world. how to avoid lines, best time of day for certain activities etc? I think we will try to go on weekdays instead of weekend. Thoughts???

If you arrive early, you can do just about anything without big lines. Sunday mornings are actually very light, sometimes more so than weekdays.

Friday and Saturday afternoons will be heaviest, but the lines are not unmanageable at any time.

If you want to watch the big shows, be sure to plan around them. People get seats very early, and you may find yourself in splash zones or standing only. Grab a lunch and have a little picnic, or bring something to entertain you while you wait.

    Don%26#39;t panic about getting in line for the 4-D show. The theater has a very large capacity, and the front seats are really not all that much better than the back ones. I have never seen one ';sell out.';

Day 1: Eat a good breakfast outside of the park. Arrive at opening. Check the schedule and plan out your must sees and/or busiest attractions. Try to group things together that are nearby. Sea World is pretty spread out - so running from say, Shamu%26#39;s stadium to the the dolphin pool wastes a good ten minutes not to mention tires you out. Around noon I would head to the water park area. It tends to fill up in the later afternoon so I%26#39;d be leaving by 2 or so. Then it%26#39;s back to the hotel for me. Lunch, nap, change into dry clothes. Back to Seaworld around 5 or 6 for evening activities. Stay until closing, fireworks.

Day 2: A little more leisurely - this is the day to catch anything you missed the first day. Hit busiest attractions first. I%26#39;d nap earlier this day, say around noon and hit the water park in the late afternoon/evening (5 or 6) See the night time Shamu Show. Leave before closing if you%26#39;re ready.

I%26#39;ll venture to say that you won%26#39;t be considered odd at all. In fact, you will have plenty of opportunity to speak with folks sitting next to you. As you know, peope in Texas are quite friendly.

If you can, get tickets in the very front row to get a great experience. I did once and it was very memorable! They cost a bit more, but very worth it!!! And nobody will care that you are by yuorself.

You will be fine. Have a great time and welcome to Dallas!

  • San Antonio hotel/motel/B&B suggestions

My husband and I are taking our 16-year old daughter, her best friend, and our 9-year old son to San Antonio this summer. He and I have always stayed at the Marriott RiverCentre located on the RiverWalk, which is a very nice hotel for a romantic weekend, perfect location and great view. However, it is too expensive for a week-long ';family of 5 vacation'; considering our activities: 2-days at Sea World, the Alamo, RiverWalk, shopping at outlets (New Braunfels), tubing the Guadalupe River. If enough time (and money) is left, we may go to the Wax Museum, the zoo, etc. And then there%26#39;s a week of 3 meals daily.

I%26#39;ve searched the web and am considering staying in another town outside of S.A. to save on hotel. My brother lives in Seguin; however, as he is a resident, he does not stay in the hotels/motels/B%26amp;Bs in his home town.

Can anyone make a recommendation on accomodations in/around Seguin?

    Thanks in advance!

    San Antonio hotel/motel/B%26amp;B suggestions

There are reasonable places in SA that aren%26#39;t in the downtown area. If you are looking for a place that charge by the week you make want to check out Intown Suites www.intownsuites.com

The Drury Inn %26amp; Suites are a great value for your money with lots of FREE amenities. www.druryhotels.com

Hawthorn Suites are good also www.hawthornsuitessa.com

Near SeaWorld you have Comfort Suites www.sacomfortsuites.com %26amp; the Hampton Inn www.hamptoninn.com %26amp; Holiday Inn Express www.holidaysanantonio.com

It may be easier to stay in SA then traveling back %26amp; forth.

    San Antonio hotel/motel/B%26amp;B suggestions

Based on what you waht to do. I would recommedn that you stay in New Braunsfels, not Seguin. Its just a short drive away.

In the alternative if you want SA, then I would recommend the Selma area. There is a Holiday Inn Express right by the Costco there, it looks new.

    Alamo Sightseeing Tours

    Hi all,

I%26#39;m planning a 3 day trip to San Antonio and was searching which day-long guided trips I should reserve since there are about half a dozen tour companies offering it. In the end, our hotel%26#39;s concierge suggested Alamo Sightseeing Tours. But I haven%26#39;t been able to find any reviews about the tour company on line. Has anyone on this forum used their service?

    Their website is: http://www.alamosightseeingtours.com

    Thanks in advance.

    Alamo Sightseeing Tours

I had some family that used them when they came to SA %26amp; they just said it was a good tour so I don%26#39;t know if that is any help cause they really didn%26#39;t go into detail.

    Alamo Sightseeing Tours

Their Full Day Tour - 55 bucks:

The Alamo: free, easily walkable from most hotels (I%26#39;d do this on my own)

Riverboat Ride: again easy to get to about $8 (I%26#39;d do this on my own)

Mission Concepcion and Mission San Jose: these are great to see NOT within walking distance of down town but there is public transportation. These two might be a reason to take the tour.

Japanese Sunken Gardens: free, not walking distance from down town, public transportation available, beautiful but maybe half an hour.

Buckhorn Salon and Museum: http://www.buckhornmuseum.com/ right downtown, not sure of the price, but again don%26#39;t really need a tour to do this.

    Texas Ranger Museum ';Admission to Texas Ranger Museum not included. Discount tickets available.';

This is an add-on to the Buckhorn ($10.95) not sure I%26#39;d go for it.

El Mercado: free, about 10 blocks from town center, explore it on your own shop, eat at your own pace.

Except for the two missions and the sunken gardens everything else is quite doable on your own.

Before you decide on a day-long guided tour, look into the trolley ticket that takes you to two missions, the Institute of Texas Cultures, the Presidio, the Cathedral and El Mercado. I believe it is about $10 per person, and the best part is that you can get on and off the trolley as you wish. We took the trolley, got off at the Institute, enjoyed a visit there, and then got back on the trolley for the next stop. Our trolley tour took us almost all day, and we enjoyed it thoroughly. There is no guide for the tour, but each place has docents or guides (except El Mercado, which is just shopping, and no one really needs a guide for that!). You can look into the trolley tours at the San Antonio Tourism website. Tickets are sold just across the street from the Alamo.

It may be an alternative tour for you. You will love San Antonio--it%26#39;s a lovely city with great attractions. Three days is not quite enough, so you will probably want to return!

It is confusing but I believe the Trolley mentioned above is Alamo

Being a local, I haven%26#39;t used either of the tours personally. But here%26#39;s my take based on what I%26#39;ve read on the internet.

Alamo Trolley suffers from the same problem as the first on. Cost too much, stops at many sites that are easily accessible from downtown and doesn%26#39;t cover attractions to the North.

$35 for two days hop on hop off (this is a better deal than the one day for $55) Sites: The Alamo; Imax Theatre, Rivercenter Mall, Riverboat Rides; Institute of Texan Cultures; Market Square; San Fernando Cathedral; La Villita(all downtown walking distance) Mission San Jose, Mission Concepcion (the two most popular missions south of town.) A little pricey, doesn%26#39;t cover the north side attractions like the zoo, the Witte, The McNay, San Antonio Museum of Art, Botanical Gardens.

Can%26#39;t decide on hotel - would like riverwalk area, kid friendly, this is the week of the festival so prices I think are a little high, but thats just part of the deal of staying so close to the ';stuff';. Is it still worth it. Hawthorn looks good but heard the constuction was really bad! Help!

What are you looking to pay?

    Hotels week of 7-7 / 7-13

was looking for something around $100.00 a night.

I almost forgot! Your top 2 resturants in the riverwalk area. We love mexican food but are truly open, %26amp; kids love to try new foods. We want a place thats has it all food, fun, a good view. Or just a place that just can%26#39;t be missed.Ya%26#39;ll are great! Thanks for all the tips.

Prices look good - I just checked Hotwire for the dates you mentioned:

$93 4-star hotel in Riverwalk North and Alamo Area

$59 3-star hotel in Riverwalk North and Alamo Area

$104 4-star hotel in Riverwalk South - La Villita

$89 3.5-star hotel in Riverwalk North and Alamo Area

Restaurants - Mi Tierra (fun touristy Tex-Mex,) Schilo%26#39;s (homemade root beer) Casbeers (great burgers,); Blue Star (Brew-Pub, homemade root beer) on the river Boudro%26#39;s (table-side guacamole)

If you%26#39;re talking about CAM (Contemporary Art Month) as the festival it really shouldn%26#39;t affect things too much. It%26#39;s very local and spread out. Some cool stuff, but not really a destination festival.

Hawthorn is great but I%26#39;m not sure of the construction noise situation as of now. You could call %26amp; see if they have a room away from the noise, I%26#39;ve done that before I travel to a hotel that had construction going on, they will tell you if they can or not.????

I agree with Mi Tierra www.mitierracafe.com or La Margarita www.lamargarita.com or Pico de Gallo www.picodegallo.com Boudro%26#39;s with guacamole prepared tableside www.boudros.com or eating at the top of the Tower of the Americas www.toweroftheamericas.com you have a spectacular view of SA while you dine as the tower rotates as you eat.

Not sure what riverwalk north %26amp; alamo area mean? I don%26#39;t remember this area at all. could you give me some hotel names? Thanks

You can go to Hotwire and see the location of these San Antonio Zones. Hotwire does not provide the names of the hotels.

To many hotels could someone point me in the right direction! would love if we could get all this. Free parking, cont. breakfast, good location riverwalk area, is that also downtown area? traveling w/ kids doesn%26#39;t have to be fancy, just a cool hotel in SA. O would love a outdoor pool.Help!

Just curious did you change your date to come to SA in another post you stated in June during the folklife festival, this one is in July??? Is this correct??? If it%26#39;s now in July did you recheck the Drury Inn or Plaza great value for your money.

Free Parking won%26#39;t be on the Riverwalk but nearby in the downtown area.

South Padre Island - Gulf side or Ocean side?

Looking to book some lodging and most sites have hotels and condos broken down by gulf side, inner island and ocean side. By the name, ocean side sounds best. However I ran across a picture that shows an overview of the island and it appears the gulf side, at least from this one pic, has larger more sprawling beaches. Can anyone tell me if this is true and which side, if any, is better?

South Padre Island - Gulf side or Ocean side?

The beaches are on what you call the ';Ocean side'; which is the side facing the open Gulf of Mexico. The other side faces a bay--Laguna Madre and is not beachy but has some water sports.

Most of the better properties are on the outer, ';Ocean side'; but really it%26#39;s a very narrow island and nothing is far away from anything else.

South Padre Island - Gulf side or Ocean side?

the term ';inner island'; means you have to walk a few blocks to the beach. Look for an ocean front property if you can.

    super 8 motel near IAH

just wondering if this hotel would be alright to stay at, it seems cheap, is the humble area a decent area to stay in? any information would be great, just need one night hotels for a lay over and will be going to an astro game. thanks.

    super 8 motel near IAH

I am sure I pass this motel all the time but cannot place it. All in all Humble is okay and from what I can gather most hotels / motels close to IAH are okay even though the area closer to Greenspoint maybe not. So short answer - I think you would be okay for one night. However, you are about 30 minutes away from the Astros stadium.

    super 8 motel near IAH

    Hi Rens,

By the time you take a taxi to town for the ball game, and then back again, you might be better off staying somewhere downtown. Check this out:

    hotels.com/hotel_Inn-at-the-Ballpark_216720.鈥?/a>

You can walk to the park from the Inn, it is across the street. There are some good walkable bars in that area, including ';B.U.S';--Bar at Union Station.

There is a shuttle to downtown, available from the airport, as well, but it would not be available at night, after a game.

You can go to ';www.flytohouston.com'; for shuttle info and other transportation and city info, as well.

    Enjoy!

    cc,

    cupcake

thanks, but i have an early flight the next morning so i want to stay close to the airport. just take a taxi back at night.

There are 4 Super 8%26#39;s within a short distance of IAH - 2 of which are in Humble. So not sure of which one exactly. Typically these motels are safe and you would be okay - however would not recommend on going for a stroll at night.

  • Guest List for Austin Nightclubs

Does anyone know of any promotional companies/websites that offer free guest lists for night clubs in Austin?

    Guest List for Austin Nightclubs

For 99% of the places in Austin, this isn%26#39;t necessary or really even thought of. You walk along, see/hear a place that looks interesting, pay the cover (if there is a cover) and enter. That%26#39;s it. That being said, in the last couple of years, a couple of ultra-lounges have popped up. These places are trying to bring a NYC/Miami/LA vibe to Austin complete with outrageous covers and bottle service. They are not terribly popular with the locals, and while I%26#39;ve never actually been inside one of these places, when I%26#39;ve walked by, they never seem crowded. (Perhaps I%26#39;m too early for the crowd.)

    This one is on 6th Street -- http://www.pureultralounge.com/Main.html . There is an email address to which you can send a request to be added to the ';guest list.';

This one is in the Warehouse District -- http://do512.com/venue/pangaea-austin . It%26#39;s main website is down (maybe not a good sign), but there%26#39;s a phone number here that you could call to see about a guest list.

Remember what everyone said about Austin being casual in response to your other post? Nix that for these two. From what I understand, people do tend to get a little more dressed up. This isn%26#39;t NYC, but you%26#39;ll probably see more girls in tiny dresses and high heels at these places.

    Guest List for Austin Nightclubs

Thanks Mr. Ted. This is helpful!! I%26#39;m from the DC area, and while guest lists aren%26#39;t really required here either it helps with waiting in line (if there are any) and paying outrages covers (which I am not a fan of). Thanks for the tip on my other post regarding the attire.

I lived in DC for 9 years, so here%26#39;s an analogy -- Austin is more Adams Morgan than Georgetown or Penn Quarter. Enjoy your trip!

  • Night out on the town for 30-something!

I am visiting Austin for a wedding this weekend with my husband and I was looking for a lineup of great food, drinks, music, and dancing for Friday night. I like hip-hop, top-40 music but want a place where we won%26#39;t feel under-dressed in jeans. We have plans to eat at the Iron Cactus for lunch on Friday but know idea what to do after that! Suggestions welcome!!

Night out on the town for 30-something!

I just follow up to my post as I shudder writing ';30-something';. I was doing some searching on this forum and a lot of folks suggest places off of 6th for %26#39;the older crowd%26#39;. I%26#39;m not a dinosaur here (I just turned 31) and I would prefer a more youthful bar/club. At the same time I don%26#39;t want to feel any older then I am if I am sandwiched between 21 year olds all evening.

Night out on the town for 30-something!

I';d suggest just walking down 6th and when you hear something you like stop in. There are all ages out and about and you%26#39;ll be fine on 6th or in the Warehouse district. Take time to look at www.austinchronicle.com or pick up a free copy when you get to town. There are listings of the clubs, genre, and who%26#39;s there this weekend.

Definitely check out Emo%26#39;s, maybe Antone%26#39;s, and on and on! Flamingo Cantina can have hip hop at different times.

Dinner could be at Moonshine, on Red River behind the convention center. Great food!

    Jeans? This is Austin! Enjoy!

We%26#39;d love a report when you return home?

In Austin, you won%26#39;t feel like a dinosaur. There is a lot of live music, and you can walk all of the warehouse district and 6th street easily. You%26#39;ll know immediately (from the outside) when you stumble across a club you won%26#39;t like.

Austin seems to be built for the 30-something crowd. You will have a blast -- don%26#39;t worry!

While Austin has a lot of live music, there isn%26#39;t a lot of hip-hop. However, there is a club on Red River that usually has hip-hop music blaring from the doors. I%26#39;m not sure what the name of it is, but if you walk north on Red River from 6th Street, it%26#39;s before you get to Stubb%26#39;s BBQ on the right side of the street. This will all make sense one you%26#39;re actually walking along the street!

Don%26#39;t worry about the age thing. I am more 30-something than you and while I do often feel like the oldest person at a particular concert or venue, there is always a mixed crowd in the downtown area. Yes, as a general rule, 6th Street and that area is mostly college-aged kids partying, while the Warehouse District is more of a place to chill and have a few drinks, but you can have a good time in either place. Also, it%26#39;s going to be hot this weekend, so consider dropping the jeans for shorts or a summer dress. Austin is very very casual.

Great, thank you guys! So is there a dress code for men then? I can wear a dress but I%26#39;m not sure what my husband should wear if we go to a club?

Based on your response here regaring what to wear and your other post about guest lists and such, I feel like we%26#39;re all talking about different types of ';clubs.'; See my response to your other post regarding the ultra-lounge type places and note that they may have dress codes for men that include things like pants, button up shirts, and shoes. You should probably call and ask before you head out to one of those places. For the most part, the bars, restaurants and live music venues on 6th Street, Red River, the Warehouse District, SoCo, or West 6th are not going to have much of a dress code. Shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops, jeans, sneakers, sun dresses, whatever are all fine.

Austin in general is very laid-back. The musical styles lean toward Texas Blues, and the ';party'; clubs cater to the college crowd.

For top-40 styles, there is usually a nice live act to be found somewhere. Many of these acts (particularly around SXSW week) go on to be very successful.

Looking for hotel, possibly in the Riverwalk area, for under $100 night. The problem I%26#39;m having is that my husband and I have 3 children (11, 9, %26amp; 6) and they want us to get 2 rooms. We are planning to come the week of July 6. Hotwire has good deals (around $90 for a 4-star) on the Riverwalk for your time frame. That%26#39;s for one room 2 adults, 2 children. I guessing that you could add a roll away bed after you booked w/ Hotwire. Might be a little tight but might be worth the price.

We just stayed at Residence Inn by Marriot located in Market Square. We were able to walk to the Riverwalk no problem. We got a one bedroom suite for about $120/night. They also had two bedroom suites for a bit more. In the one bedroom suite the bedroom is separate from the living room and has a door on it. There is a tv in the bedroom. The living room has a sleeper sofa and desk and chair and tv. We also got a roll away bed(complimentary) There is also a small kitchen and table. It was a little small for 4 adults but we managed ok. There was only one bathroom and that was in where the bedroom was. You should go on there website and see if it would suit your needs. Very clean and great breakfast and great staff!

Lost Colony - 5 star prices, 2 star condo

    I%26#39;ve been coming to Port Aransas for 15 years for a week in the summer. This year, they changed management companies and the price nearly doubled. I think it is because of the demand, as Port Aransas has been ';discovered.';

We have stayed at the Lost Colony condos for the past 5 years. (the 1-20%26#39;s) We know that everything tends to rust and decay at the beach, so we always bring hammer/nails/duct tape. We thought they would upgrade the condo decor and maintenance with the extra money. NOPE. Still the same garage sale furniture. Old, OLD food in the cabinets that has to be cleared out to put your stuff in. Garage too full of old junk to put a car in. A/C too small for unit. Blinds missing. Doors sticking. Commode running almost continuously. The gate that allows you in to the complex quit working. They advertise it with a full, queen and king bed, but there is no queen (it%26#39;s a full).

We knew it was shabby, but expected some upgrades in maintenance, etc with the 5 star price they are now charging. We were very disappointed that all they are doing is pocketing the extra money. Management is unresponsive and they sincerely do not care if you are happy. For years, their response to any maintenance issue has been that the maintenance man just quit. Oddly, he does this just before our stay!

My friends stayed in one of the units that was advertised as 2 bedrooms and a loft. It actully had only 2 bedrooms. There was no loft; only an extra twin bed in the upstairs master bedroom. One person had to drag a mattress into the livingroom for privacy. Their A/C quit working the first day. Their kitchen sink was stopped up, so they could not run the dishwasher. This was not fixed until their final day.

These maintenance issues should be addressed BEFORE someone begins their vacation. If they are not going to use the extra money to upgrade the condos, why can%26#39;t they at least use some of it to inspect them before ruining someones hard earned vacation?

I guess we will have to find a different beach. For what we paid, we could have been pampered at an exclusive resort!

Lost Colony - 5 star prices, 2 star condo

Mizscarlett, I feel your pain! I love Port A, too, and have been vacationing there all my life. I expect rustic and weathered beach facilities. However, neglect and filth are different. I had a similarly disappointing, ruined vacation, ';I don%26#39;t know if I even dare to return'; experience in June. It was that bad. I don%26#39;t know what you paid, but we paid $150./night for a weeklong stay. That was the most affordable price I could find ';on the beach';. I did not expect luxury, but I expected decent, clean accommodations. It was filthy and disgusting. I wanted to post a review on the motel%26#39;s review page, but couldn%26#39;t find one, so I just copied it in a couple of places. Please read ';Seaside Motel and Condominiums on Sandcastle Drive'; for further details. I hope you have a better experience next time. I think it%26#39;s wise to trust the collective advice on TripAdvisor in order to prevent this type of vacation disaster. Thank you for the warning!

Lost Colony - 5 star prices, 2 star condo

If you go to the ';overview'; page for port aransas, you%26#39;ll see it in the top tabs, then go halfway down the page to the reviews and post your own review. You really should do this for both places as not everyone reads the forum.

Thanks, found the proper place to post the review. I just really want to warn fellow travelers, who are spending their vacation time and hard earned dollars. It%26#39;s horrible to have your vacation spoiled!

Sorry to hear that you had a bad stay, cause that can definitely put a damper on your vacation. I suggest you check out the Sandcastle next time you plan a trip to Port Aransas. The condo are very clean and management are very nice and helpful. The condo are very close to the beach. They have a boardwalk to the beach which is real nice and all the rooms face the gulf coast. It is shaped like a

(U ) horseshoe so you get a nice view of the beach and the pool.

It is so comfortable that you feel like you are at home.

Any updates here? I am considering a condo at Lost Colony in June. I really want to be close to the water, and their front ones appear to be the closest of any I%26#39;ve seen to the beach. It would definately be a splurge and I%26#39;m looking at a 3 bedroom condo for 2!!!!

This review is making me reconsider, but I%26#39;m just not finding much that is appealing to me. I am worried about all the grundge. I would also like to be somewhat isolated and away from the crowds.

Are there any good beach houses out there that are small? $200 a night fits my budget better than $400 to $500.

gottagettomexico ... check out Starkey Property Management ... we have rented a cottage on the beach for June and I%26#39;ve gotten some positive responses concerning the way management handles things as well as the cottages themselves ... worth a shot ... can%26#39;t remember what we paid, but it was in the range you have specified ... good luck ...

am88--Thanks for trying to help! I did see some cottages at Starkey, but they are all booked. They were right on the beach and looked great! They look like the ideal laid-back beach vacation. I just don%26#39;t think many seem to be offered....

We just got back from a week stay at PA, Lost Colony. It was very expensive and we had maintenance issues from the time we walked in the door. It had a grubby worn out feel. Air conditioners didn%26#39;t work or were insufficient. There was a bucket under one bathroom sink because the faucet leaked. I kept asking if the properties were inspected before they were rented but never got a truthful answer. The location is wonderful, almost right on the beach but I felt we were ripped off. It was advertised as a 3 bedroom 4 bath with 2 car garage. There was no garage. One bay had been very poorly converted into the third bedroom, which reeked of mothballs. The other garage was closed off. There were goathead stickers everywhere, ants everywhere and even a rattlesnake. Yikes!

I just noticed Trip Advisor has a new category ';Vacation Rentals'; and says they are recommended by travelors. I looked for a way to move my post to the specific condo I am talking about, but there was no option for that. FYI, I was in 18 and my friends were in 21, and the same ';professional management'; (Ha!) company had them in 2007. I haven%26#39;t been back, but I see from a recent post, it%26#39;s the same old crap.

I agree - we stayed in Lost Colony #20 and it was not in great shape when we got there. Certainly when they are charging $3,000 a week the accommodations should be pristine, clean, and well maintained. They are definitely not putting the extra money back into the units.

At #20, the master bedroom had holes in the wall over the bed where the headboard used to be (in the photos it shows a headboard). The AC unit was too small for the house, and so the master bedroom upstairs was extremely stuffy and my husband and I ended up avoiding it, which is unfortunate because it had a great view of the beach.

My mom and sister arrived at the house before us and could not find the third bedroom - turns out that part of the garage had been converted into a tiny room with bunk beds (which were falling apart) and no working AC. Though the maintenance company did come and fix the AC, while there they found a rattlesnake right under the back porch. Not the kind of welcome we wanted.

Also, the beach is so small that when cars drive by they are literally a foot away from the people on the beach. Kind of scary. I like Port A but it would be much better if cars were kept off the beaches.

    bahn apartment

I guess I should have gotten on here before.. I just booked an apartment at Schlitterbahn on the ';bahn';side. There are four of us and we want to grill out and have a couple of drinks after playing at the park all day.. just enjoy the summer. Is this the right place or does anyone know what I am in for??? Does anyone have any tips or other info?

    Thanks!

    bahn apartment

This is the original side of the park and it sounds great for what you want to do. These are by no means fancy hotel rooms, they%26#39;re Port Aransas motel rooms, if you know what I mean. I think they make the park experience better because you can stop, relax, catch you breath, have a snack, drink, use the bathroom and then head back out to the excitement of the attractions.

    bahn apartment

The newer ones on the other side are nicer, bigger, BUT, I still like the original side for it%26#39;s quietness. The trees are bigger, cooler, not a ton of people, nice quiet older pool. The train is pretty close but if you aren%26#39;t expecting much in the room, you%26#39;ll do fine.

  • Getting from Houston to Galveston

We are cruising out of Galveston and need to get to Galveston Cruise ship harbor from Houston airport (G W Bush) and return to the airport at the conclusion of the cruise. Would like anyone%26#39;s advise on the cheapest and best way to make the connection. Would looking into the limo services make sense? Bus travel? Where do we start? Thanks. Sultan 06

    Getting from Houston to Galveston

There are quite a few shuttle services, but they look very pricey (~$200 round trip and up). I would think you could do better hiring a cab.

http://thetransferanswer.com shows a round trip fare of $76 -- it might not be bad for a shared ride. I have no idea as to the quality of this or any similar service.

    Getting from Houston to Galveston

How many ppl? Limo or Taxi would be the best bet. Here is one web site http://www.aj-limousine.com/galveston.html. Several others - it will also depend on whether you want shared or not.

Seen the same question in the Houston or Galveston forum - maybe around July / Aug last year. Search - might have more info.

If you have a car you might want to check out The Magic Time Machine. Don%26#39;t remember how the food is, but it%26#39;s more age appropriate. http://magictimemachine.com/

I agree with ShinerBock2GO, that would be a lot better place than Dick%26#39;s.

Although overpriced,The Rainforest Cafe is fun for kids...For food and fun games there is also Incredible Pizza and Dave and Busters..

would dick%26#39;s be inappropriate for 2 17 year old girls? We are looking for fun places to take them , maybe a sing along place?

It would be ok for 17 year olds, but keep in mine while they serve food, its more drinking then eating place and loud too.

I would go earlier in the evening, and avoid the ';rowdy'; crowd later at night.

17 year-olds might enjoy Sam%26#39;s Burger Joint particularly on a night with music they%26#39;re into. Check out http://www.samsburgerjoint.com/

    Riverboats?

I see riverboat tour, riverboat taxi, %26amp; then I thought I saw a short boat ride of some sort. I%26#39;m assuming the taxi takes you from point A to B for a fee. Where to they pick up? I heard you had to have a tocken. Are there 2 riverboat rides/tour/ Cost, %26amp; do you have to purchase ahead of time. Is it better to see at night, with all the lights?

    Riverboats?

Here%26#39;s the website http://www.riosanantonio.com/ it has all the info including stops for the taxi. I would choose to to take the tour first thing in the morning or as you figured out at night. Temperature is the main factor here.

    Riverboats?

If you plan to use the river taxi alot than it might be better to purchase a day pass.

Here is the cost of water taxi.
