our trip to Dallas

I´am planing our trip to Texas. We are going to fly on Sep 26 to Houston and going back on Oct 09.

We already bought Football tickets for Texas A%26amp;M on Oct 03 in Dallas and Houston Texans tickets for Oct 04 in Houston.

I would like to be one or two nights befor the A%26amp;M game in Dallas but where should we stay? Should we book a hotel in Fort Worth near the stockyards or are there other nice places in Dallas to stay. I would like to see a rodeo and we both love country music.

We are not sure how we should plan our Texas trip because it is a big state. Do you have any suggestion for us? We are planing to drive from Houston to San Antonio, to Austin, to Bandera and to Fredericksburg, than we should be in Dallas and Houston for the football game. After the game in Houston we still have time to see what?

Thank you for your help

The Texas A%26amp;M game is actually at the new Cowboy stadium located in Arlington, midway between FW and Dallas. I would recommend staying in downtown FW and spending maybe the Friday night in the Stockyards, going to the rodeo and some of the bars, including the White Elephant and Billy Bob%26#39;s.

You could go to the State Fair in Dallas on the Thursday, taking the TRE (Trinity Railway Express) over to Dallas, then catching the bus or light rail to the fair.

Since your trip is split down the middle with the football weekend, you may have to double back a little on the driving in order to see all the places you want to go. As long as you enjoy driving, no problem.

You might combine the first few days after you land in Houston in a road trip to San Antonio/Austin (definitely hit the Broken Spoke while in Austin), up to FW/Dallas for the Stockyards/A%26amp;M game, down to Houston for the Texans.

Then decide if you feel up to driving back out toward Fredericksburg/Bandera. I think it is worth the trek but you might be pooped by then. Again, depends on how you feel about all the driving around.

Thank you for your answer. I booked a Hotel via priceline in Irving (Hyatt Place) before the A%26amp;M game. We are excited to see the new Cowboys stadium. It looks awesome! Hope the parking fee will be not too expensive. Is this game a special game for A%26amp;M because the don`t play in their own stadium? Can you tell me where we should stay in Austin? I would like to stay close to country bars, so no one has to drive. Can I compare Austin with Nashville??

In Austin, you could stay at a Bed and Breakfast. The Austin Folk House is really funky and breakfast is terrific. It is close to campus and downtown. The same awesome people own the Star of Texas Inn just about 2 blocks away.

IMO Austin is nothing like Nashville. Austin is really a big city and capital of Texas. (We rode Segways while in Austin. Cool ride.)

Nashville is country and feels small town. And that%26#39;s a good thing.

Frederickburg has about 300 Bed and Breakfast. You can find and book them by going to the BnB.com website.

Texas A%26amp;M has set up a 10 year deal (with a 20- year option) to play a game each year in the Cowboy stadium. This will allow for a wider audience and more revenue- their home base in College Station isn%26#39;t a huge metroplex like FW/Dallas.

I suggest you look at staying downtown in Austin- it is a very walkable city and you can find lots of music venues along Sixth Street as well as the Warehouse district and 4th St. What may determine where you decide to stay is price and availablity. There are quite a few threads addressing this. We have enjoyed Extended Stay (not fancy but free parking and kitchen) and the Radisson (close to Congress for bat viewing).

As far as music and Nashville- Austin is billed as the ';Live Music Capital of the World';. While that does include some great honky tonks and CW music, the live music scene in Austin is much more varied and sometimes eclectic. You won%26#39;t find a row of honky tonks as you would see on Broadway in Nashville. You will get more of that honky tonk/live CW music feel in the Stockyards of Fort Worth.

Threadgills is a good restaurant with a live music venue and lots of history. I haven%26#39;t been to Donn%26#39;s Depot on 5th yet but hear it is fun.

Not all the best CW clubs are downtown or walkable. The Broken Spoke is a classic and you can see some great live acts at the Continental Club (for example Dale Watson)but not all will be country. Ginny%26#39;s is a small place but fun. Best bet for these is take a cab.

Some people would be offended when Nashville and Texas are mentioned in the same breath. Nashville music is definitely more commercial. Texas has a slighlty different genre of music..and proud of it.

Austin is definitely the %26#39;big city%26#39; when comparing

to the city of Nashville

Gruene Hall is the oldest dance hall in Texas.

It is right next to the Grist Mill Restaurant which is awesome. (Eat there first and you will want to eat every meal there!!!!!! And the prices are very reasonable.) Next door in the Gruene Mansion Inn, a great place to stay because you can walk to everything from there.

The town calls itself Gruene but it is actually a part of New Braunfels, TX. You will need to prebook your room because all the Bed and Breakfast sell out nearly every weekend in the summer. And there are not any hotels in Gruene. You can also ride the river there.

(I ate at Oma%26#39;s Haus and I wish I had eaten again at the Grist Mill Restaurant instead.)

Gruene should definitely be on your list of places to visit while in Texas.
