Night out on the town for 30-something!

I am visiting Austin for a wedding this weekend with my husband and I was looking for a lineup of great food, drinks, music, and dancing for Friday night. I like hip-hop, top-40 music but want a place where we won%26#39;t feel under-dressed in jeans. We have plans to eat at the Iron Cactus for lunch on Friday but know idea what to do after that! Suggestions welcome!!

Night out on the town for 30-something!

I just follow up to my post as I shudder writing ';30-something';. I was doing some searching on this forum and a lot of folks suggest places off of 6th for %26#39;the older crowd%26#39;. I%26#39;m not a dinosaur here (I just turned 31) and I would prefer a more youthful bar/club. At the same time I don%26#39;t want to feel any older then I am if I am sandwiched between 21 year olds all evening.

Night out on the town for 30-something!

I';d suggest just walking down 6th and when you hear something you like stop in. There are all ages out and about and you%26#39;ll be fine on 6th or in the Warehouse district. Take time to look at www.austinchronicle.com or pick up a free copy when you get to town. There are listings of the clubs, genre, and who%26#39;s there this weekend.

Definitely check out Emo%26#39;s, maybe Antone%26#39;s, and on and on! Flamingo Cantina can have hip hop at different times.

Dinner could be at Moonshine, on Red River behind the convention center. Great food!

Jeans? This is Austin! Enjoy!

We%26#39;d love a report when you return home?

In Austin, you won%26#39;t feel like a dinosaur. There is a lot of live music, and you can walk all of the warehouse district and 6th street easily. You%26#39;ll know immediately (from the outside) when you stumble across a club you won%26#39;t like.

Austin seems to be built for the 30-something crowd. You will have a blast -- don%26#39;t worry!

While Austin has a lot of live music, there isn%26#39;t a lot of hip-hop. However, there is a club on Red River that usually has hip-hop music blaring from the doors. I%26#39;m not sure what the name of it is, but if you walk north on Red River from 6th Street, it%26#39;s before you get to Stubb%26#39;s BBQ on the right side of the street. This will all make sense one you%26#39;re actually walking along the street!

Don%26#39;t worry about the age thing. I am more 30-something than you and while I do often feel like the oldest person at a particular concert or venue, there is always a mixed crowd in the downtown area. Yes, as a general rule, 6th Street and that area is mostly college-aged kids partying, while the Warehouse District is more of a place to chill and have a few drinks, but you can have a good time in either place. Also, it%26#39;s going to be hot this weekend, so consider dropping the jeans for shorts or a summer dress. Austin is very very casual.

Great, thank you guys! So is there a dress code for men then? I can wear a dress but I%26#39;m not sure what my husband should wear if we go to a club?

Based on your response here regaring what to wear and your other post about guest lists and such, I feel like we%26#39;re all talking about different types of ';clubs.'; See my response to your other post regarding the ultra-lounge type places and note that they may have dress codes for men that include things like pants, button up shirts, and shoes. You should probably call and ask before you head out to one of those places. For the most part, the bars, restaurants and live music venues on 6th Street, Red River, the Warehouse District, SoCo, or West 6th are not going to have much of a dress code. Shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops, jeans, sneakers, sun dresses, whatever are all fine.

Austin in general is very laid-back. The musical styles lean toward Texas Blues, and the ';party'; clubs cater to the college crowd.

For top-40 styles, there is usually a nice live act to be found somewhere. Many of these acts (particularly around SXSW week) go on to be very successful.
