Buses and taxis

We are due to visit Austin June and will stay mainly in the city visiting the music venues. Does anyone have any useful information about getting around Austin without a car? eg. is public transport a viable option? As we will probably be relying a lot on taxis can anyone give advice on whether this is an expensive option? Many thanks.

Buses and taxis

Are you going to be staying in downtown? If so, you can manage pretty easily without a car. Buses run most frequently downtown and there is a special trolly-looking bus called the %26#39;dillo (short for Armadillo) and runs two routes through the downtown and major tourist areas. Public transportation does not run late at night, i.e. after the bars close, so you will have to take a taxi to get back to your hotel. Taxis are readily available at downtown hotels and in the entertainment districts. If you are using it to travel within downtown, it%26#39;s not expensive, probably less than $10 a trip, but if you are staying outside of downtown, it will be much more.

Here is a link to the site with the bus maps and schedules - http://www.capmetro.org/ If you%26#39;ll be downtown the Dillo is handy for getting around. The previous poster was correct, if you are within the downtown area, about $10 should get you where you need to go.

Thanks very much. We are staying at the Wyndham Court Hotel on the I35 in the south.

This is a nice hotel but the majority of guests here will have a car.

I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll be able to use public transportation very easily from this location.

You can take a cab to downtown and then walk as much as possible, getting a cab back to the hotel at the end of the night.

Not impossible to do, but will require a little more planning.

You may want to consider a rental car.

Welcome to Austin!
