Dinner in Abilene

We will be passing through Abilene on our roadtrip %26amp; will be spending the night. I was looking for a good, inexpensive dinner. We%26#39;ll have four teenage daughters with us. Not looking for a chain. Doesn%26#39;t have to be bbq, but if that%26#39;s the best place that%26#39;s fine.

Dinner in Abilene

There should be some decent Tex Mex food.

Your best bet is to ask someone once you get there.

I live in Abilene, welcome. the Texas Roadhouse ( not to be confused with Logans Roadhouse, which is fairly close in location, but not quality) Is a chain, but very good food and atmosphere. I usually don%26#39;t like sirloin, but they cook it great there. good suggestion. for bbq and steaks, Perini ranch steakhouse is a favorite. China Star is a great chinese buffet(not chain). and there are several tex mex places. Abuelos(chain) . look those up online and see what you think. there is also a YUMMY new place called Belles chicken dinner house. if you have ever been to a Babes chicken dinner house, its kinda the same thing. you pick your meat, ( chicken, chicken fried steak, or whatever) and the veggies are served family style. it is really good, and close to the interstate, easy off, and back on for hotels. do you know where you are staying yet? I%26#39;d pick belles, or perini, or the Beehive downtown is great also. 3 ';non-chains';

Hum, lots of good suggestions. I should probably clarify. I guess a chain would be ok if it%26#39;s local. I was just not interested in eating at Chili%26#39;s or Applebee%26#39;s, etc. When we travel we like to eat what the locals like to eat, basically NOT what we can get at home. I have teenage daughters, so we like to make it someplace fun %26amp; unique. Casual. We%26#39;ve never eaten at a chicken house. Is that something we should try? We%26#39;ll probably have bbq in San Antonio %26amp; probably plenty of steaks %26amp; burgers along the way. So maybe something different here although the Roadhouse sounds good too. Thoughts?

I%26#39;d vote for Belles. i%26#39;m hooked on the chicken breast, and corn, and rolls, and......

as I said it is close to the interstate.

Perini Ranch Steakhouse is in Buffalo Gap, which is about 10 miles south of Abilene, prob an extra 40 min. from where you would exit the interstate, but very nice scenic drive, unless you are in a hurry, it%26#39;s a non factor, compared to driving around in San Diege, Abilene is tiny.

the Beehive is downtown, and is very good also. it is more upscale dining, but still Texas. Downtown is prob 20 min from where you would get off the interstate. The Beehive is very good food, and has a ';parent'; restaurant in Albany, Tx (30 min. north of Abilene) called Fort Griffin General Merchandise.

this is another ';famous'; Texas restaurant.

if you have the time, and want to get outside, and ';out of town'; i%26#39;d prob pick Perini Ranch. look them up online. they have cooked for the president, and hollywood weddings!

ask away if you have any more questions, or if you want specific directions, mapquest and google maps will send you way out of the way.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think we%26#39;re going to go to Belle%26#39;s. Is sounds like something different %26amp; fun. Thanks!

You have probably already made your trip. I am in town for work and asked for a good mexican place. Something local and not a chain. The hotel desk clerk recommended Los Arcos on Ambler. It%26#39;s small and it doesn%26#39;t look like much, but the food was great. It%26#39;s obviously a place where locals go because people were waving at each other. Most plates were around $7. Can%26#39;t beat that! They serve beer but don%26#39;t have a full bar.

my favorite mexican ';dive'; is Farolito%26#39;s at N. Treadaway and N. 1st/hwy 80. you have to go to N. 2nd st and turn east then south ( two right turns).
