I%26#39;m plannng a trip to texas, going to San Antonio for a few days, should I go on to Galveston or Chopus? We would like to camp right on the shore or as close to in a nice campground....
Thanks for any info....
Galveston or Chorpus Christi?
Corpus Christi is a bit closer (about 2 hours driving time) and includes miles of unmolested beach at the Padre Island National Seashore.
The area along Mustang Island is more developed with condominiums and resorts. Port Aransas is the top beachside tourist center, a small, trendy spot on the Gulf of Mexico.
Here is a list of things to do in our area:

Galveston or Chorpus Christi?
I think Galveston%26#39;s greatest charm is the old part of town with the Victorian homes, their wonderful restaurants and the shops. I will say that our last trip found that most restaurants we enjoy were open but the shops weren%26#39;t back open yet but that was in late Feb so I feel more shops are open now.
There is a state park about 9 miles west of the seawall where you have been able to camp beachside. That park was damaged during the hurricane so I%26#39;m not sure of it%26#39;s current status.
Galveston is a great island and I love it!
Galveston is about a 4 hour drive from SA. That alone would have me recommend Corpus. In addition, Port Aransas, Mustang Island, National Seashore are all more natural venues which it seems you%26#39;re looking for. Gehrig%26#39;s advice is right on!
Galveston Island State Park is now cleaned, refreshed and ready to be used! I visited this past weekend. They have laid down tons of fresh new beautiful sand and to attract visitors are not charging a fee for entry. They are also giving tours every weekend and hosting lectures about the local wildlife. If you call they can recommend a local group who does kayak trips through the marshes. Enjoy your stay!
