My college daughter has a summer internship in Houston. (Yea!) The company recommends staying in the Midtown or Galleria area (Midtown is closer to where she will be working). It will be just her %26amp; her dog. She is researching online %26amp; has some concerns about Midtown due to crime (break ins). Any suggestions of good areas OR areas to avoid?
Relocating to Houston for the summer - HELP!
Key is to find a complex that is gated. Generally speaking mid-town and Galleria area are good areas, but can have the break-ins where the doors / windows are accessible to the outside. I had a friend that lived at a complex between Westheimer and San Felipe just inside the loop - great place / great location. She will of course be limited to those places that offer a 3 month minimum (usually it is a minimum 6-month lease).

Thanks so much for your input. She has actually found quite a few that will do a 3 month lease. (I was surprised.) We are planning a quick trip next weekend to actually see some apartments, this really helps.
The Rice University/Medical Center and the University of St. Thomas areas generally have considerable summer sublets available. Locations of both are such that Midtown is easily reached by light rail or bus. Craigslist is a good source, the universities may have listings on their web pages, and the vast universe of blogers and twitters are all good sources.
The dog may close you out of some sublet options.
Thanks for the ideas, that would probably work better for her. I will suggest she research the light rail and see if that would be an good option.
I agree that her dog limits her choices, but we all will sleep better knowing she has it with her!
My son lived at a nice safe gated apartment complex called Essex House apartments on Weslayan and Westland near Central Market near Westheimer.
The Gael across the street is also nice and managed by the same company called Gables.
I thought it was a great location...by central market foods, and other shops. A very nice part of town and just down the street from the Galleria. No rail but she%26#39;ll need a car in Houston anyway.
Best of luck to her....
';Midtown'; means ';downtown';..... they just had to think of a cuter marketing name....it%26#39;s rough.... there%26#39;s spots of growth and niceness, but it%26#39;s still downtown....
She found a very nice gated complex close to Buffalo Bayou Park. It%26#39;s close enough that she can either drive or take the Metro. We really appreciate everyone%26#39;s input - thanks.
We are going to be spending various weekends visiting her, beginning with Memorial Day. Is there a website that summarizes available activities, such as concerts, sporting events, etc?
Some good general purpose Web sites are as follows:
General city wide info,
www.visithoustontexas.com/
Daily newspaper online , with a number of entertainment sections
wwww.chron.com
A weekly hard copy and online news service, aimed at the 18 to 30 segment, and those who wish they were. Good entertainment listings %26amp; above average restaurant reviews (current ones especially)
www.houstonpress.com
Another web based review site for the 18 to 30s
www.yelp.com
Many of the large attractions, such as the Museum of Fine Arts, have their own expansive home pages, and there are a number of popular restaurant review sites, such as www.b4-u-eat.com
Thanks for the information. I%26#39;m sure it will be a fantastic summer for her (and us, too)!
