We are coming to Austin mid June on a weekend to check out UT for my son who wants to attend there. There are 2 of us with 2 teen boys and a freind with 2 teen daughters so we would like a ';suites'; type of hotel. Can you make any recommendations near campus but also near places to walk and eat out at some nice Tex Mex or other ';non chain'; type restaurants? Thanks
Hotels near UT campuDo you have a budget?
UT has a new conference center and hotels, which has a few suites. I have a monthly lunch meeting there and can vouch that it is clean and very nice. But it is pricey. Obviously, it is within walking distance of all things UT and is close to the bus stops to go downtown. (Or you could walk, but the heat/humidity....)

The other suites hotels (Doubletree, Embassy on Town Lake, Hampton Inn) are further from UT but closer to the downtown action. (I think I heard that the Hampton Inn is not a true ';suites'; hotel, but not sure.)
Lots of Tex-Mex, lots of different opinions. Within walking distance on Congress, I like Manuel%26#39;s, especially their chile rellenos.
Hotels near UT campuAT%26amp;T Hotel and Conference Center is right on the campus, but I%26#39;m not sure about the suites aspect. Doubletree downtown Austin is a good hotel with true suites--a sitting room between two bedrooms. Not sure about walking to restaurants, though, as we drove everyplace or took taxis when we stayed there.
Most of the downtown hotels do have some suite rooms. I%26#39;d definitely ask = Hilton, Radisson, Embassy Suites. Hampton Inn etc. But given the option of a suites hotel or staying downtown -choose downtown definitely.. Austin is very easy to navigate and there%26#39;s no reason to stay right on top of UT at the AT%26amp;T Conference Center. It will be more fun to stay downtown and take a cab or rent a car out to the campus. There%26#39;s a lot to do downtown and it%26#39;s easy walking. Lots and lots of restaurants, shopping, music, definitely non-chain!

Doubletree Suites is probably going to be your best bet. It is about 2 blocks to where campus starts and if a little heat doesn%26#39;t bother you, there are many places to eat within walking distance. Also, the Dillo runs by there which is cheap transportation.
thanks so much got on the austin site yesterday through a link on UT and ordered the visitors guide so thanks for the tip. Rates of hotels are high in Austin-seems nothing under $150 a night which surprises me. Need to do some more searching. Will stay DT the conf centers is over $400 for 2 nights-not spending that much to get in at midnight and just sleep!
Yikes on the cost of the UT conference center. No wonder why my husband doesn%26#39;t put up guests there.
Any of the other hotels are fine. Check out the bus and especially the Dillos (part of the bus system focusing on downtown). There%26#39;s even a bus from the airport.

If you want to trade location for price, I recommend the Northcross Suites. Nice, clean, but in northwest Austin. We put up family there. But I%26#39;d recommend staying downtown if you can.

Hotels prices in downtown Austin are not really that high for a visitor destination. However, if you are willing to get a little further out, perhaps Georgetown/Round Rock/ Cedar Park, you can find more of the chain type suite hotels that might be more in your price range. I think ';near campus'; and ';walk and eat'; are the key phrases in the previous downtown recommendations. For a visit to UT to check out the area, downtown is more what people generally want to experience. However, for cost savings, check out the suburban areas, perhaps using Expedia.
