Reeived a great recommendation from ';Yankeetransplant'; for the Omni Hotel in Southpark. Now I need some restaurant suggestions within walking distance or we will have a car to drive to any further locations. We%26#39;re middle of the road folks (breakfast $5, lunch $10, dinner $15-20). Like barbecue, steaks, seafood.
One other question...have seen many post regarding Arboretum. What is it? An area in Austin or a building.
In Austin 6 days, so if there are other ideas to see or visit, please let me know via a post.
Thanks to all

Restaurants near Omni SouthparkI%26#39;m glad the Omni had a good special for you! Bad news is there isn%26#39;t any restaurant near it. Good news is you%26#39;ll have a car to get into town.
The Arboretum is an area of town at 183 and Loop 1/Mo Pac. It%26#39;s primarily big box stores plus Container Store, Crate %26amp; Barrel, Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn etc. There%26#39;s also a great deal of traffic in this area.
I%26#39;d recommend you make the Visitor%26#39;s Center at 209 E. 6th one of your first stops, get a free vistor%26#39;s guide and maps. Take the 90 minute Austin Overtures from there. The van covers the downtown, UT and edge of the Hill Country. It goes by all the major attractions and you%26#39;ll learn both the history of Austin as well as what%26#39;s currently going on. After the tour you%26#39;ll have a good idea of what you want to return to and how to get there.
Take time to take the free tour of the capitol building. Also free and worth a stop is the LBJ Presidential library. Another top museum is the Bob Bullock History of Texas.
Definitely walk through the Driskill Hotel lobby and maybe have coffee. This hotel has been beautifully restored, even has it%26#39;s own resident ghost.
There%26#39;s a tram (50 cents) for going up and down Congress and up and down 5th and 6th Sts. No narration but a great people mover.
Some of our favorite restaurants in your price range:
Tex-Mex - Chuy%26#39;s, Maria%26#39;s Taco Express,Manuel%26#39;s, Iron Cactus, Z Tejas, Guero%26#39;s.
Home Cooking - Threadgill%26#39;s, Kerbey Lane
Italian - Carmelo%26#39;s, Cannoli Joe%26#39;s,
Misc - S. Congress Cafe, Belmont, Eastside Cafe, Shady Grove, Hula Hut
Burgers - Hut%26#39;s, Waterloo Ice House
Barbecue - Iron Works, County Line, Ruby%26#39;s and lots more -
Steaks - Austin Land and Cattle
Don%26#39;t miss the Whole Foods main location at 6th and Lamar. Parking underneath for 1,000 cars. Lots of food stations and tables outside by a small stream.
Across the street from Whole Foods is one of the largest independent book stores in the US. - Book People.
And last but not least, don%26#39;t leave Austin until you%26#39;ve had an Amy%26#39;s ice cream. Multiple locations around town!
With 6 days, you will also have time to drive to Fredericksburg and explore some of the little towns west of Austin. The LBJ Ranch is west of Austin and a great place to picnic. It is part of the National Park Service.
Have a great visit Tacobill and give us a report when you return home?
Restaurants near Omni Southpark
If you leave the Omni on the frontage road going north, make a left onto 290/71 and then go to the first light you will be at South Lamar. There are a couple of places in the vicinity, a little to the north is Habana, a really good Cuban resturant. Going south on Lamar is Hill%26#39;s Cafe which is down home cooking with live music. Also south on Lamar, then flipping around back towards I-35 are several fast food resturants. You are not far from downtown and all the resturants there.
Yankeetransplant,
You must work for the chamber of commerce in Austin.
If not, they should hire you because you%26#39;re a bundle of information. I know we%26#39;ll enjoy our Austin visit with your%26#39;s and Jodi123%26#39;s information.
