There is lot of beach on which to pitch a tent. I would look at the Padre Island National Seashore. Miles and miles of natural beach

Tent camping in Corpus

The National Seashore is a National Park so there is an entry fee. ($10) There is also a burn ban in effect due to the drought. They are allowing small BBQ devices but no open fires.
