Thoughts on where to stay when visting Schlitterbahn

Any thoughts on where to stay for 2-3 nights when visiting Schlitterbahn from out of state. Is it worth staying at the resort or off site?

I rarely like to pay premium prices to stay at a resort or on property. For me I%26#39;d stay in San Antonio - Priceline northeast area of SA, 3 star.

That said, if you like relaxing, or have several folks in your party with varying degrees of activity levels (like teenagers and pre-schoolers) it%26#39;s probably worth the extra money to have the convenience of being able to take some of the group back to the room.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Selma, TX, between S.A. and New Braunfels, it was a very nice, new property and not far to either location town.

Of course, if you only plan to visit Schlitterbahn, it would make sense to stay closer to the waterpark, but I too would stay off the park grounds.

Welcome to Texas!

New Braunfels has the typical chain places..Hampton, La Quinta etc.

..

It would depend on the rest of your schedule. If you are visiting SA then I would probably stay closer/ in SA.

enjoy!

don%26#39;t forget Rudy%26#39;s BBQ in New Braunfels...

(3 locatons in SA)

How many will you have staying? We usually go several times in the summer and have recently starting renting a condo. We have found it to be quite economical and much nicer than a hotel or campground. There is a new complex near Schlitterbahn %26amp; the Comal called the Waterwheel. I have seen several units there and they are very nice.

You should consider Gruene...5 minute drive to Schlitterbahn but tucked in nice location with lotsa shops and restaurants to walk to and Gruene Hall at night for a beer and live country music.

None of these are budget accomodations but the location and atmosphere in Gruene is worth the added expense in my opinion. Also the tubing and rafting outfitters are right there.

It depends on your needs. If you have various age ranges, it%26#39;s more convienant to stay on site... there are two areas, we always stayed at ';the rapids'; side. This is a very large park area. We found it nice to be able to rest in our room while our older kids stayed in the water areas. It%26#39;s safe and even kids in early teen ranges can roam around without you needing to worry. Unlike other parks, you can take food in if you like.. and drinks.. all in all, this has been the favorite destination of our kids for many years. DOn%26#39;t miss going over to Gruene, Tx ( google website) .. it%26#39;s a small quant area at the edge of New Braunfels.. eat at the Gristmill Rest on the river, listen to the music coming from the oldest dance hall in Texas and spend some time in the wonderful shops .. you don%26#39;t want to miss Gruene... I hope you enjoy this trip as much as my family has many, many times.. good memories there.. dh

We%26#39;re going to be staying at the Schlitterbahn Resort with our four teen-age daughters %26amp; spending the day at the waterpark. My question is: We were thinking of having dinner at Rudy%26#39;s (or other good bbq), but now I%26#39;m thinking, should we driver over to Gruene for dinner? From what I%26#39;m reading it sounds like we shouldn%26#39;t miss it. Is Gruene directly between SA %26amp; New Braunfels? Would teenagers like it? Thanks!

Gruene is just a few miles west of NB and definitely worth visiting. I loved going to the Gristmill to eat and Gruene Hall for great live music as a teenager and my 19 year old brother does now too.

andynapril,

Gruene is a 2 minute drive past Rudy%26#39;s... Just follow the signs to Gruene Historic District

We absolutely LOVE the Waterwheel condos. Very nicely decorated and supplies, very roomy. Also 2 great pools for when you are tired of the river water. Huge lawn for playing games and BBQ grills.
