The rental agreement given to you when the car is rented nearly always will list the charges by hour and by day for late returns.
My last rental from Hertz was a weekly rental with a base price of $210 (before taxes and fees) for 7 days ($30/day) and the charge for an extra day was $37.50.
Or hours. Best thing, check with the rental agency. If you need to extend the rental it may be cheaper to extend for another 24 hour period than a hourly rate.
They will charge the daily / hourly rate. Usually no penalties. It would be a good idea to let them know.
It also depends on how often you use them. We use Hertz every time (4-5 times a month). They will ignore 10-15 minutes for us. I know I%26#39;ve been charged for being an hour late though and my charge was a percentage of the full price. I cant remember how much just that I felt it was deserved. Some poor guy didnt make his plane because of me. :-/
