Dallas and north Texas holiday ideas

I would be grateful of some help.

My wife, 1 year old son and I are flying into DFW from the UK for a two week holiday in October this year. During this time we will visit family who live in Oklahoma City. The forums are proving most useful but would be grateful for your help.

We love visiting museums, theme parks, wildlife parks, historic sites, etc.

I suspect we%26#39;ll stay in the dallas Fort Worth area for a few days before taking some kind of route up towards OK.

Looking forward to your suggestions

If you are in the area between Sept 25 through Oct 18, consider visiting the State Fair in Dallas at Fair Park.

The timing of your visit is most fortunate since October has the finest weather of any month here. The outstanding theme park here is Six Flags over Texas located in Arlington, between Dallas and Fort Worth. Fort Worth has splendid art museums, especially the Kimball and the Modern. It%26#39;s a very inviting little city for visitors. It also has a first-rate zoo and botanical garden.

In Dallas I would suggest the Dallas World Aquarium downtown and, if you like scultpture at all, the Nasher Sculpture Garden The top historical museum in the area would be the Sixth Floor Museum, located in the old Schoolbook Depository building from which President Kennedy was shot. There is also a fine complex of museums in the Fair Park area. If you are in town while the Fair is open, you should definitely attend.

There is a wildlife park near the town of Clifton, which is Southwest of Fort Worth. I%26#39;ve never visited it myself, but a day trip in that direction would be a good bet. Dallas and Fort Worth are built on a featureless prairie and offer little in the way of natural beauty. The area beyond Fort Worth, however, is more interesting and will give a taste of the ';real Texas'; often seen in movies etc.

The trip to Oklahoma City should be relatively quick--only four hours or so by car if you are driving, otherwise less than an hour%26#39;s flight. If you do drive, you might consider a detour to Oklahoma%26#39;s Arbuckle Mountains. Not the world%26#39;s most lofty mountains but very nice in their own way.

Hope you have a wonderful trip.

fromtheedge gave you an excellent response. I second everything he/she said (well, I%26#39;ve never heard of Clifton, but I bet it%26#39;s nice).

The suggestion to take a detour into the Arbuckle Mountains is also a good one. We love Beaver%26#39;s Bend, you might enjoy a night or two in a cabin there if you have the time.
