Houston with children

I am interested in traveling to Houston with my 3 children; ages 11 months, 3 years, and 5 years old. Are there any fun things to do with kids? Any amusement parks or water parks? How%26#39;s the children%26#39;s museum? Any places to listen to mariachi music? Any kid friendly hotels?

I%26#39;ve never been to Houston, so where would I stay? It seems to be a huge city.

Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

With little ones, consider staying in the museum / hospital districts.

The Houston children%26#39;s museum is one of the nation%26#39;s absolute best -- it is fantastic when not overcrowded. The museum of natural science around the corner is also very good for kids (and adults) of all ages, with many hands-on activities (be sure to check the basement!). The Space Center is also good, but that will depend on your child%26#39;s interests. It has a large hands-on area and play area inside.

I%26#39;m not sure about kid-friendly hotels -- we often opt for a suite, and find those very good, since the kids have a separate room to themselves.

Astrowold closed years ago, so the only thing in the way of parks are the waterparks. There is one in Galveston (a bit of a drive from downtown Houston) that seems to be the most popular.

For Mariachis, I%26#39;ll have to pass the baton to someone else. We hear LOTS of mariachi music in San Antonio, so we never seek it out when visiting Houston...

Hi BC,

I looked for pages with kid friendly places listed, and this page had quite a few! I would def recommend the Houston Museum of Natural Science; it houses the Cockrell Butterfly Museum and a cool hands-on area for kids, too. The Zoo is nearby--go as soon as it opens--it gets hot quickly in Houston, like I know it does in MSY, and the animals are out early, when they can enjoy the cooler morning temps(cooler being 75 and not 95!).

The Children%26#39;s Museum IS wonderful, and is in the same area.

If you have a car, you might want to look for a Staybridge Suites or a Drury Inn near the Galleria, as going to the Galleria on a hot day is fun, for all ages. Both of those hotel chains will have a pool, which you will want to head back to, about 3pm each day.

H-town is very well-connected by a few basic freeways, and a GPS is a must here! We have nicknames for our freeways (like, I-10 run to Katy, TX, so you wil hear it called the ';Katy Freeway';, and not by its%26#39; number--Texans... we love and nickname everything!)but with a GPS, they are easy to navigate. I am a 3rd gen Texan, and I have one!

There is a Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Galveston, TX, and if you have a car, that is about 45 min to an hour from Houston, and would be a fun, cool day, in the Texas heat. Nasa is out that way, and also fun for the little ones, too.

Some Mexican food places have Mariachi Music...go to :

for the Best way to find what and where to eat, in Houston..note that you can choose to look for places with outdoor dining, live music and more--the reviews there are real, and usually very wonderfully honest.

Hope this helps, and you all enjoy H-town!
